Recently, our church partners in the coastal and Amazon regions of Ecuador told us of an urgent need to protect children from diseases caused by mosquitoes.

Along Ecuador’s coast and in the Amazon jungle, mosquitoes infect children with dengue fever, Zika virus, chikungunya, malaria and other illnesses. As the heavy rains of winter set in, an increasing mosquito population leads to a high rate of illness among children in Compassion’s program. Last year, our church partners were scrambling to help families recover from these illnesses. This year, they’re trying to stay ahead of the illness season through strategic education and preventive measures. They’re already educating communities about how to avoid these illnesses, but many families can’t afford the nets that could protect them from mosquitoes while they sleep.

One of the most dangerous illnesses in these communities is malaria, a parasitic infection transmitted by a certain type of mosquito. There are about 219 million cases of malaria worldwide each year and more than 400,000 deaths. Most deaths occur in children under age 5.

We need to meet this urgent request quickly, helping families avoid the physical, emotional and financial burdens of illness. Once fully funded, this project will provide mosquito nets, fumigation and prevention training for 5,512 participants in Compassion’s program.

Would you donate toward this important opportunity for churches in need?

Gifts shown here illustrate goods and services used in Compassion’s holistic child development program. All contributions designated for specific funds will be applied to those projects and to administering the gifts. We desire to be good stewards of your gift, and when we receive more contributions for a given fund than we can use, we apply those funds to meet similar pressing needs.
